Experimental Pathology and Tumor Biology
Outline
We have been elucidating mechanisms of carcinogenesis in various organs including the prostate, urinary bladder, liver and mammary glands using originally established animal models. Chemo-prevention of carcinogenesis and mechanisms of metastasis are also one of our research subjects. We have also establishing short and medium-term systems to detect environmental carcinogens.

Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics
Outline
The research projects in our department are focused on human pathology. Examples are Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics of the thymus, molecular pathology of malignant lymphoma, sugical pathology of the soft tissue, GI-tract, and lung tumors and immunopathology of interstitial pneumonia.
The students are also encouraged to participate in the diagnostic practice.

Pharmacology
Outline
Endothelial dysfunction is a critical risk factor for future development of cardiovascular diseases. We have studied the mechanisms underlying the development of the endothelial dysfunction in cardiovascular diseases. Our goal is to find a better treatment to prevent this dysfunction.

Bacteriology
Outline
The aim of the studies in this department is to elucidate (1) the pathogenesis of virulent bacterium, especially Streptococcus pyogenes which causes streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), and (2) the relationship between host and bacterium. In addition, we contribute to the control of infectious diseases in the hospital.

Immunology
Outline
Immunology is related to many aspects of medicine, including infection, vaccine, cancer, autoimmunity, allergy, transplantation and inflammation. Therefore, learning how to regulate immune response is a key to develop new strategies to fight many kinds of human diseases. Our research focuses on regulatory T cells and dendritic cells to manupilate immune responses for future clinical therapy.

Virology
Outline
We study virus-associated or extremely rare diseases using genetic approaches such as next-generation sequencing and single-cell analysis. Target viruses include Epstein-Barr virus (EBV, a cancer-associated virus) and SARS-CoV-2. Target diseases include EBV-associated cancers and intractable diseases (especially chronic active EBV infection), COVID-19, childhood cancers, and inherited bone marrow failure syndromes.

Comparative and Experimental Medicine
Outline
Our department (founded in 2008) mainly studies the causes of hereditary disease by using transgenic and gene targeting technologies.
We have established various gene-engineered mouse lines with modified allele of the genes related to the glycosphingolipid metabolic pathway to investigate the pathophysiological roles of cell surface glycoconjugates. Moreover, we also started researches about novel macrophage molecules functioning in inflammatory responses at an individual level.

Orthopedic Surgery
Outline
Founded in 1951, the Department of Orthopedic Surgery is committed to delivering the highest quality of diagnostic and therapeutic patient care to both adults and children for a diverse spectrum of orthopedic disease such as spine, joint, hand, pediatric, sports disorders and musculoskeletal tumors. In addition, the department seeks to meet the needs of the latest care by leading development of treatment modalities through basic and clinical research programs.

Rehabilitation Medicine
To the Laboratory Site
Outline
Department of rehabilitation medicine was newly established in 2014 and Dr. Ikuo Wada, the leading person in the field of pediatric orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation medicine in Japan, took up a post as the first professor. We are engaged in evaluation and treatment of patients who are suffering from disability caused by various kinds of diseases including orthopedic disorders, stroke, cancer, and hereditary diseases. In research, we work on the pathophysiology of children's osteoarthropathy and impaired neural plasticity in adulthood. Translational research is ongoing as well to develop new rehabilitation techniques for patients especially with hereditary and neurodegenerative disorders.

Psychiatry and Cognitive-Behavioral Medicine
Outline
This department is solidly based on the principles of evidence-based medicine. Our major areas of interest lie in psycho-oncology, cognitive-behavioral therapy, neuropsychology, child psychiatry and epileptology. In 2007, we were ranked 5th in psychiatry research out of all universities and research institutions in Japan.
Staffs
Outline
This department deals with the multidisciplinary subspecialty of oncology concerned with the emotional responses of patients at all stages of disease, their families and staff. The first goal is to achieve the quality of life, and the second goal is to clarify the psychological, social and behavioral risks that influence cancer incidence and survival.
Staffs
Neurosurgery
Outline
The Neurosurgery Department has full activity of clinical practice, in which carotid artery surgery and stenting, intravascular neurosurgery, DBS for Parkinson's disease, acoustic neurinoma surgery and awake surgery for glioma are predominating. Basic research includes expeimental ischemia, hydrocephalus, carotid imaging and posttraumatic impairment of higher brain function with PET imaging.

Obstetrics and Gynecology
Outline
We are dedicated to providing the high-quality women's health care services. Faculty research involves many areas related to women's health, including recurrent pvegnanly loss, recurrent miscarriage, infertility, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, prenatal diagnosis, fetal therapy, high-risk pregnancy and gynecological oncology.

Pediatrics and Neonatology
Outline
The child is not a scale-down copy of the adult but an attractive living creature totally different from the adult. We are developing researches on the investigation of the pathogenesis and the discovery of the novel treatment for various diseases among newborns and children.
